About this piece

⚱️ Kim Hong-do, known by his art name Danwon 단원, is renowned for lively depictions of everyday Korean life in the 18th century. His paintings are beloved for expressive brushwork, humor, and humanity—capturing farmers, scholars, children, merchants, and artisans in scenes full of character. Danwon's style blends spontaneity with careful observation, using fluid ink lines and soft color washes to portray movement, personality, and community as iconic windows into traditional Korean culture. ⚱️ Among the eight panels, the seventh features one of Kim Hong-do's most famous works, "Seodang 서당," a charming village school scene. Young students gather around their teacher with postures full of personality—some distracted, some diligent, some playful. This painting highlights Danwon's gift for capturing everyday humor and warmth, offering glimpses of education and childhood during the Joseon era. ⚱️ The folding screen is crafted with ink-and-color artwork mounted on wooden frames lined with traditional Hanji 한지. Each panel showcases a different Kim Hong-do scene, creating rich narrative that unfolds across the entire piece. The back features ink-painted Sagunja 사군자 motifs (plum Mae 매, orchid Nan 난, chrysanthemum Guk 국, bamboo Juk 죽), symbolizing noble character and scholarly virtue, with designs that may vary slightly. ⚱️ Compact, lightweight, and deeply cultural, this folding screen makes meaningful accent for desks, bookshelves, tea corners, study rooms, and Asian-inspired interiors. It also serves as thoughtful gift for art lovers, Korean culture enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates painterly storytelling.
