Shin Yoon-bok Korean Folk Painting Folding Screen, Tabletop Decorative Divider, Korean Genre Art Byeongpung

About this piece

⚱️ Shin Yun-bok, known by his art name Hyewon 혜원, is celebrated for vivid depictions of daily life, fashion, courtship, and social gatherings in the late Joseon dynasty. Unlike many artists of his time who emphasized solemn scholarly scenes, Shin Yun-bok captured the elegance, emotion, and subtle romantic tension of urban life—portraying dancers, noblewomen, entertainers, musicians, and couples with striking sensitivity. His style is known for delicate linework, soft colors, expressive figures, and almost cinematic atmosphere, offering an intimate, human-centered view of society rarely recorded in traditional painting. ⚱️ The first panel features one of his most famous works, "Dano Pungjeong 단오풍정"—a lively scene depicting women enjoying the Dano Festival, washing their hair in streams and playing on swings. This painting highlights Shin Yun-bok's gift for capturing beauty, movement, seasonal festivity, and the elegance of Korean attire as one of the most beloved images in Korean genre painting. ⚱️ Each of the eight panels presents a different Shin Yun-bok masterpiece, printed on traditional Hanji 한지 and mounted on sturdy wooden frames. The reverse side features ink-painted Sagunja 사군자 (plum Mae 매, orchid Nan 난, chrysanthemum Guk 국, bamboo Juk 죽), classic symbols of noble character and artistic refinement, with artwork that may vary slightly. ⚱️ With its blend of artistry, cultural depth, and compact size, this folding screen brings poetic touch to modern interiors—perfect for home décor, study rooms, tea tables, or as thoughtful gift for art and history enthusiasts. Every Seoulful Vintage piece merges Korean heritage with modern grace, reimagining centuries-old artistry.
